Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and it’s no secret that dogs have long been considered man’s best friend. Their unconditional love, companionship, and loyalty are just a few reasons why dog ownership has been proven to combat depression and improve mental health. In this article, we will unveil the specific qualities that make French Brittany dogs particularly effective as therapy pets and share real-life stories of individuals who have benefited from their companionship.

How Dog Ownership Fights Depression

Owning a dog provides numerous mental health benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing social interaction. Studies have shown that interacting with a dog can release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes feelings of happiness, relaxation, and trust. Additionally, dog owners tend to be more physically active, which can lead to an increase in endorphins, further boosting mood and combating depression.

The French Brittany: A Breed Above the Rest

French Brittany dogs, known for their intelligence, adaptability, and affectionate nature, stand out as exceptional therapy pets. Their friendly temperament and eagerness to please make them great companions for people of all ages, especially those struggling with mental health challenges.

For instance, Sarah, a 32-year-old woman suffering from anxiety, found solace in adopting a French Brittany named Daisy. She says, “Daisy has been a constant source of comfort and support during my most difficult times. Her presence helps me stay grounded and focused on the present moment, rather than getting lost in my anxious thoughts.”

Studies Supporting the Benefits of French Brittany Dogs

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected diverse populations [129–134] and our results provide evidence that pet owners and potential pet owners have also been impacted. Our results show that pet dog owners were significantly less depressed than non-pet owners during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are attached and committed to their dogs and they reported more social support available to them. Our work adds to the corpus of scientific literature demonstrating that pet dogs may positively contribute to the wellbeing of owners during difficult times. However, more work is needed to better understand the relationship between pet ownership and social support as modulators of owner wellbeing. Future research should focus on people with low and moderate social support and include owners with diverse dog attachment levels.
