Have you ever heard a Vegan trying to convince a meat eater to go Vegan? How about listening to that meat eater trying to change the Vegan?
Well when you wander into the debate of whether or not to feed a French Brittany a kibble diet or a raw diet, people square off and usually shout at each other just like the Vegans vs meat eaters- Which we won’t get into here…
But sadly there is a contingent of people that believe they can make their dogs vegan as well to match their own lifestyle and food preferences. This is called Starvation. Canines can be herbivores and be healthy. Diets like Beneful are starving your dog and depriving them of nutrients they absolutely need.
Now the Raw camp has a new division as well called Frozen Raw or prepared Raw.
Here is the bottom line of a very long argument back and forth… I grew up with the idea that dogs were carnivores. I held this belief through much of college studying Animal Science and nutrition. I figured a wolf runs into a corn field and eats the pheasant, not the corn. He runs into a field and eats an elk not the grass. But then a professor surprised me with an argument of “What part of the elk or pheasant does the wolf eat first? The answer of course is the organs. Which of course contain plant material partially digested etc. Then if we look at at the anatomy of a skull of a French Brittany, we see that when they masticate they can chew up and down and side to side. Carnivores can only masticate up and down to rip and tear their food, and herbivores masticate side to side to grind their food. Omnivores do both.
So I conceded canines were an opportunistic omnivore. They aren’t eating ears of corn, but rather getting corn in the crop of the bird, as well as partially digested corn in the stomach and intestines.
Then I have met so many goofy dogs along the way that will willing eat fruits vegetables etc.
Heck apples and peaches are coming on the fruit trees right now and I kid you not my silly French Brittanys go stand on their hind legs, pick green apples and green peaches and eat them every day.
So we can agree that dogs are omnivores and not only do they eat a mixed diet they need a mixed diet even though their metabolic systems are designed to metabolize proteins and fat directly to energy.
So the kibble camp has these advantages… When you are dealing with a high quality diet properly formulated, it provides balanced nutrition for our dogs in a simple convenient easy package. You have to be careful supplementing the diet with other treats and snacks and table food, because that can unbalance an already complete diet. I wouldn’t want to eat just one thing for the rest of my life, but I am not a dog. They do it happily and do well doing so. Kibble is affordable, complete, and simple.
Raw regardless of what kind of raw diet we are talking is very expensive, its perishable, it must be prepared fresh every day, it is harder to balance for a complete nutrition profile and did I mention very expensive? The only benefit when you cut through all the rhetoric is that it offers a dog variety when done perfectly and assuming you are reaching balanced nutrition.
Now I will concede that for some individuals feeding a dog is a big part of that persons day and relationship with their animals. If they find joy and value in that who am I to say they should do otherwise? If they can afford it, financially and time wise what does it matter?
Neither one is better if we assume complete nutrition is achieved, but it is easier and more affordable to achieve complete nutrition with kibble.
Of course the kibble we feed and recommend is Life’s abundance
