There is an idea I want to address. The cliché of a man’s best friend with undying loyalty and unconditional love.

Dogs do possess the ability to love this way and be loyal, but it is however conditional. It is conditioned upon them being properly cared for as well. It does depend on the absence of abuse, fear, and pain. You can not beat a dog regularly and expect that dog to love you.

It blows my mind however as I look back over my life and training experiences and mistakes I have made both very big and very small. I am astounded at a dogs ability to forgive and forget. They can move past a lot of things if we give them changed behavior going forward. Sadly this is why some training methods work with a French Brittany that shouldn’t be used. They can forgive and forget, but they are a softer breed why put them through it?One of the very best punishments I used this last week is I had a girl who didn’t make nice clean retrieves. She even chewed on my bird making me so mad I want to use bad words! I yelled at her and told her I was disappointed and she didn’t get to ride home in the front seat of the truck. She had to ride in the dog trailer. She knew I was disappointed. When it came time for bed she crawled under the bed to sleep instead of laying on my chest like she normally does. I bet her retrieve is going to be cleaner next time and I didn’t have to hit or shock or choke or otherwise punish and compel her.

Anyway our dogs love and forgive us so much better than humans, but we must love them as well and take care of them. Treat them with kindness.
