The ASPCA publishes a list of top toxins most commonly reported each year. This list helps save hundreds of thousands of animals by providing lifesaving information to pet parents.

Here are the top 10 Toxins of 2022:

 

 

Over-the-Counter Medications

Pain medications such as Iibuprofen and Acetaminophen being the most common. This list also includes cold and flu medicine, vitamins, and supplements as well as joint rubs. Ensure to always keep these up high and out of reach of your pet.

 

 

Food

Protein bars, xylitol gums, grapes and raisins are the most common foods ingested.

 

 

Human Prescription Medications

Mostly commonly seen are antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and cardiac medications.

 

 

Chocolate

The ASPCA gets almost 5 calls an hour about chocolate ingestion!

 

 

Plants

Household Toxins

Disinfecting wipes are the most common item pets are exposed to.

 

 

Veterinary Products

This includes chewable medications such as calming chews or pain medications.

 

 

Rodenticides

These can cause internal bleeding, seizures or kidney failure depending on the type.

 

 

Incenticides

Ant baits, bug sprays and other yard products or fertilizers may be enticing yet toxic to your dog.

 

 

Recreational Drugs

Marijuana joined the top 10 list this year as it can cause serious problems such as changes in blood pressure or aspiration pneumonia.
