Discover The Best Treats for Training Your French Brittany Puppy
I am highly opinionated when it comes to training treats. They are one of our most important tools in our toolbox. Many people ask me what place treat training has in training bird dogs. Or tell me that’s not how their dad did it, or their best friend the professional trainer and on and on. I get it. But the fact is, when working young puppies on obedience, treat training is the way to motivate and reward them at their stage of development in a way they understand. I really recommend you use the lure reward training taught by Dr Ian Dunbar for young puppies starting at 7 weeks old to teach them stand, sit, and down. The stand is going to become your “whoa” reinforcer later on and sit and down are so important to make a dog easy to live with. It is so simple even my young kids do it, and you can see how fast the puppies catch on.
In the old days all obedience training was compulsion type obedience. I will force you to do this, and if you don’t I will punish you. So dogs learned to avoid punishment, they didn’t really learn to be obedient. That’s not the kind of relationship I want to have with my French Brittany. Would you keep going to work every day if they stopped paying you? Probably not so it is important to understand a “reward” to a puppy is a like a paycheck for doing what we want them to do.
So back to what type of treats. I hate biscuit type treats. Anything dry and crumbly like a milk bone takes too much time to chew and swallow and the puppy has already forgotten what it was rewarded for, and it takes too much time to get back on task with training. We want something high value that they really love, that is healthy for them and quickly and easily swallowed.
I most often use cut up pieces of hot dog. They are meaty and moist, made of protean and fat. They are cheap and easy to find. I love string cheese as well for the same reason and I can carry around pieces for several hours in a treat bag without them becoming a problem.
I use something like this to slice them up fast and easy in training size portions:
No I don’t get anything from sharing that with you, but its a great tool for hot dogs and string cheese. It makes perfect reward sized bites with little to no work.
I also love these treats because they are much healthier and dogs love them as well:
